Best Practices For Getting & Keeping Your handbags Clean

We've all taken our health for granted at one point or another.

But right now our personal health is at the forefront of our minds. In the past, I have offered tips and tricks to keep your bag looking newer longer, whether that was preventative care or more maintenance over time. Your handbag is an investment, so keeping it clean is always a great idea.

However, COVID-19 has us all thinking a little differently about germs and its relationship to the things we touch and for many of us, the things we store in our handbags. So I thought I’d put together a list of ways that I could help ease your mind during this time from my little small business corner of the internet.

Let's Start With

Prepping your bag

Take everything out and sanitize your items BEFORE putting them into your bag (preferably make a routine out of it). Now how do you sanitize the inside of your bag? Well, the great news, if you have our bags, is they allow you to pull out the lining, so you can vacuum it and gently wipe it down with a damp soapy cloth. Allow drying before reinserting into your bag.

Next Step Is

Investing in several small washable pouches

Separate your items that have high contacts like your hone, wallet, and keys from your other items, especially cosmetics and medications. This will not only help with cross-contamination but will keep you more organized. Bonus!

In case you were wondering, according to studies we check our phone once every 12 minutes or on average 80 times a day, and since most of us store our phone inside our handbag, well you get the picture. Besides that, we set our bags down on all different surfaces (and you better not be placing that bag on the floor!). Although no one can live in an entirely clean and germfree environment at all times, there are simple things we can change to make our handbags cleaner, inside and out.

Top Five Ways To Keep The Inside Of Your Bag Clean

  • Do not store food, even if it’s wrapped, inside your bag. It is very easy for it to come in contact with bacteria already existing in your bag.
  • NO shoes in your bag. If you must, put them inside a separate washable designated bag to seal and carry them.
  • Avoid storing used tissues and other trash in your bag or pockets, but if you must you should have a designated disposable or easily washable pouch for them.
  • Now is the perfect time to declutter: the less you carry, the less surfaces have the potential to be contaminated. Lotion bottles and hand cream containers are typically the most germ covered items in our bags (besides our phone of course). Consider leaving them at home or sanitize them often to be extra safe.
  • If you carry a water bottle, find one with a protected mouth area so that it can’t be exposed to other items in your bag. Plus, it’s no fun when it spills inside and leaves lovely watermarks. Ps: if it does spill take everything out of your bag and let it air dry for best results.

Ways To Keep The Outside Of Your Bag Clean

Keep bags off surfaces in public areas.

I know this is harder than it sounds. If you don’t already have a purse hook, it could be simply hanging your bag on a coat rack or your lap versus placing it on a chair and definitely not the ground. We will also look into getting some purse hook options on our website since those work almost anywhere.

Even in your home, create clean spots designated for your bag.

Preferably near your home’s entrance or in a specific spot in the closet, that way your bags do not contaminate your other surfaces and you won’t forget where you put it.

Take extra time to clean handbag handles.

Handbag handles can carry more bacteria than the average toilet seat. Yuck! The good news is most of our bags are crossbody, and those offer less contact with your hands. If you do have a handle bag, you can wrap it in a washable scarf, which is fashionable too.

Use an anti-bacterial cleanse spray on your leather.

I discovered a product from a London based company that has been tested and proven on all types of leather and fabric to kill 99% of common bacteria to keep handbags healthy and clean. So I am inquiring about how to get some for my website.
